Celtic and Rangers fans can now take their rivalry to a new level, thanks to an update on Amazon’s Alexa assistant.
From television and newspapers to graffiti on toilet walls, it’s almost impossible to escape the tit-for-tat and acrimony of Scottish football’s most bitter rivalry.
Now though there’s a new dimension to the Glasgow divide, with Amazon revealing that its virtual assistant Alexa will be able to join in with her Rangers or Celtic supporting owner.
From today fans will be able to ask the device to serenade them, with the device responding with a taste-appropriate response.
Gers fans have only to say: “Alexa, sing me a Rangers song” to hear terrace anthem ‘Follow Follow’, while Hoops supporters can sing along with ‘Hail Hail the Celts are here’ by requesting a Celtic number.
There are also pre-packed pieces of inter-team banter, that can be accessed by asking Alexa for a burn.
The personal assistant will then respond with lines such as “How does that song about Brendan Rodgers being there for 10 in a row go? I’ve not heard it for a while” or “Have you ever seen Gerrard win the league?”.
There are football chants and roasts for more than 40 Premier League, Championship and Scottish Premiership teams, including Hearts and Hibs.
Jambos can be reminded of one of the greatest days in their history by asking for a Hibs burn, with Alexa then asking “I’ve got two posters of 90s boy bands. Would you prefer a Boyzone one or a Five one?”.
A Hibee asking the same question will be met with “How does that 1902 song go again? I’ve not heard it for a while”, and Alexa will also be able to provide up-to-date stats on individual players.
The move may well be aimed at homes where both sides of a footballing divide are represented – just imagine the increase in sales when a particularly cheeky Alexa has to be replaced…
