He was linked with a transfer all summer long, but Paul Pogba is going to be “a huge player” for Manchester United , says club legend Denis Irwin.
Pogba has faced criticism for his displays in a United shirt already this season, following a summer during which he was widely tipped for a move to Real Madrid .
But Irwin says Pogba – who was also linked with former club Juventus throughout the summer – will be crucial for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side now that he can focus on playing.
And former Red Devils left-back Irwin hailed Pogba’s ability to “unlock doors” with his style of play.
“He is going to be a big, big player. A huge player for us,” Irwin told Sky Sports. “He is the one who can unlock doors, who can see passes.
“Sometimes when you take risks, you are going to give the ball away a lot more but people need to understand that.
“He is our risk-taker, he is the one who is going to create.”
Irwin added: “A few games this year, we have had a lot of possession and created a lot of chances to win games but we need to win more.”
“He is going to be vital for us to do that.
Irwin also hailed summer signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has impressed at right-back since his £50million move from Crystal Palace .

“His tackle ratio has been fantastic,” said Irwin. “His positional sense looks really good – he’s still got a lot to learn but he’s been a huge plus this year.
“We need to tighten up defensively – last year we conceded far too many goals. He has helped us improve that, as well as Harry Maguire.
“We need to keep clean sheets again, and we’ve made steps in that direction.”
