Grant McCann is keen to implement his bold attacking style with Hull City as he looks forward to the 2019/20 season.
McCann became the Club’s new Head Coach on Friday and immediately gave fans an insight into the type of football he likes his sides to play.
“We’ll be a very high energy team and we like to play on the front foot,” said McCann, who will be joined by assistant Cliff Byrne at the KCOM Stadium.
“We’ll be open at times but it will be fun to watch. The players will enjoy playing in the formation and we take risks. I’m a firm believer that, if you don’t take risks, you don’t get anywhere. When we don’t have possession the team will work hard to win the ball back with a high press and real energy all through the team. That will bring us success, I’m a firm believer in that, and we’ll work hard on that every day in training to make sure it comes to fruition.
“It was very important to me that Cliff came here, too. We had a successful season with Doncaster Rovers last season. We did that together along with the players and staff that were with us. We want to build on that and do it with the players here. It will be hard work, but it will be enjoyable and the players will enjoy their work.
“We’re here to try and get the best out of people. We’re quite hands on in terms of giving people the chance to improve, and if they do that then we’re going to be more successful on the pitch.”
McCann, who managed Peterborough United before reaching the League One play-offs with Doncaster last season, admits he is ‘lucky’ to have such a good base to work from in terms of the current squad and is looking forward to getting started properly when pre-season training begins on Monday.
“I’m very lucky to be here with the foundation that was left by the previous regime, who we know very well,” added the 39-year-old former Northern Ireland international.
“We have a really good base to work from and we want to add to that and put our blueprint on it. Hopefully we can give the fans what they want to see and that is a real attacking zest about our play, we want to excite them and get them out of their seats every week.
“My immediate priorities are getting to know everybody. I know the players and staff from afar but I want to get to know them personally. There is a really good set of staff here and a really good base of players.
“I can’t wait to get started with pre-season training on Monday. We’ll give it the best we can and enjoy the ride. That will be my message to everybody.”
